I was delighted to be contacted by Gillian the grand daughter of Eustace Farquhar Rowsell (1867–1911) who kindly provided me with a photograph of Eustace’s wedding around 1900. He was engaged to marry Evelyn Francis Loveless (1872-1935) in London and seven years later she travelled with her father Charles Dilkes Loveless (b. 1828), who was a witness at the wedding, to Ceylon to marry Eustace. Based on this fact, I can assume few if any of the other people in the picture are her relatives.
Charles is the elderly gentleman behind the bride. I am fairly certain the balding gentleman on the far right is Norman Rowsell (1855-1919) and that the little girl next to him is his daughter Esme Rowsell (1891-c. 1975). The woman next to Eustace bears a far closer resemblance to the photograph I have of Norman’s wife Florence Rowsell (1857-1942) than the woman next to Norman does, so it may well be Florence. She has distinctive features.
Norman’s other daughter Marion “Bunnie” Kathleen Rowsell (1896-1990) was born in Ceylon in 1896 so she would have been four in 1900, meaning she could well be the little girl next to Evelyn. I include the original photo I was sent as well as an AI improved and colourised version and the photos of Norman and Florence I have for comparison.
What do you think? Have I identified them correctly?
EDIT: Gillian has also sent me a second photograph which confirms many of my above identifications, as this one has names written on the back. The names are (left to right) Norman, Esme, Evelyn, John (baby), Mr. Moir, Florence, Bundle (evidently this is Bunnie Rowsell).
